The Throne of Celedon

It has been an eventful few months since my last entry. We have made steady progress in our goal to acquire the various components that of the artifact known as “The Crown of Storms”, though it has not been easy.

Of the five gems that we seek, now possess the opal, the ruby and the emerald. I have studied the opal and the emerald exhaustively over the course of several weeks. I am fairly confident that I have unlocked their individual powers – anything more will come once the crown is re-assembled. Each gem hold six powers: three that I have labeled “major” powers, and three that I have labeled “minor” powers. This categorization is based on the relative spell power of the spells that the gem mimics. For example, the opal contains a powerful abjuration effect that wards against negative energy and death-based magic – a major power. However, it also allows the wielder to infuse his touch with negative energy to disrupts the life force of living creatures, damaging them and sapping their strength. This ability is very similar to a common apprentice-level necromancy spell – thus, a minor power.

The ruby, which is known to be linked to the school of transmutation, remains unexamined at this point, as we only today wrested it from the grip of a vicious barbarian chieftain known as Comric. I am eager to learn if it will add to my own expertise in transmutation.

Though I have unlocked the activation of these powers and disclosed them to my companions, I have also warned them against the potential negative effects of using these items. It must be stressed that these gems are as powerful as any I have studied. By simply holding them one can feel it. When these items are wielded by those unfamiliar with the ways of magic the possibility exists that the power can be channeled inefficiently, ineffectually or, worse yet, erratically. It is the latter that holds the greatest danger, as a portion of the magic affects the user directly. I have not felt these effects myself, my training in spellcraft having protected me thus far, but I am certain of it. The hobgoblin king is evidence enough of this. A warrior through and through, I do not doubt he knew little of the workings of magic, and thus, over time, the gem that he wielded had begun to transform him into a cyclops-like creature.

It has been through brute strength that we have managed to acquire these gems. Perhaps another time I will dedicate more parchment to detailing these events, but for now, suffice it to say that with each gem we acquire, we collect more and more deaths, though none permanent thanks to our cleric companion and our allies.

We now have our eyes set on locating a winter witch who is thought to be in possession of the sapphire, linked to the school of abjuration.

Aldrine 16 - Hegelin 15, 1069

Aldrine 16, 1069

We have made progress on our quest to obtain the black opal. Via a combination of teleportation and the conjuration of phantom steeds, we now find ourselves in a forest northeast of the city of Orfort far beyond the borders of Celedon. The lair of the dragon is rumored to be close, though the exact location of it is not yet known to us.

Joseph, I believe, would be glad to know that the party I have joined is as noble and courageous as any of legend. It was proven today in a vicious battle with a band of ettins.

Common folk whom we encountered in the cities and towns along the way to the dragon’s lair told of a band of two-headed giants that had been terrorizing the area for some time. Upon learning this, the party decided without hesitation that they would see this menace ended.

We approached cautiously and as prepared as we thought prudent. Safe in our extradimensional mansion high above the marauding giants, our sorcerer cast invisibility and flight on each of us, and we all used whatever other magics and tools we had available to us to aid us in our fight. Once ready, we descended upon the group of ettins who scattered in terror at the force that had appeared so unexpectedly.

However, our planning could not fully prepare us for the sheer power of the leader. The enormous ettin leader of the band was a champion of some dark power who had been corrupted. Fiendish wings protruded from its back and it gripped large, unholy weapons in clawed hands attached to arms as thick as tree trunks. Two massive heads held eyes that gleamed with malevolence and an intelligence that betrayed its ettin heritage.

What unfolded was a true battle between light and dark as our party engaged the mighty foe. The paladin Serena, filled with righteous wrath, charged. Khidaj and Gintare, too, entered the fray while I conjured a gargantuan dire crocodile that tore huge chunks of flesh from any ettin unlucky enough to find itself within reach. From afar, Suman tapped into his sorcerous power and rained destruction on any and all while Morgan stood in the wings, ready in an instant to lend aid to her companions.

Lesser ettins fell to sword stroke and arcane power alike, but the shrewd captain of the ettins, caught off guard by the heroes’ charge, retreated a short distance and consumed a potion, instantly becoming invisible. Inspired to cut off the escape of the leader, Morgan asked her diety for a minor blessing that would purge invisibility effects around her and swiftly flew in the direction the chieftain had retreated. The creature became visible and the party rounded on him, sensing that the other ettins were now contained by the enourmous reptilian beast, who had by now, managed to swallow a number of ettins whole.

The chieftain, realizing his ruse had failed him, returned to his greatest strength, his sword-arm and in a fury, lashed out at any hero that came too near. Blow after demolishing blow landed upon ranger, paladin and fighter as they fought to send the ettin to his death, but as the battle progressed, it was my companions that were suffering the greatest injuries.

Seeing this, I tried ineffectually to disable the creature, to slow it, to trap it… Nothing worked. The unholy protections the leader’s patron had bestowed upon it thwarted my futile attempts to stymie the carnage. My companion’s blows, though vicious and capable of felling most foes in a single strike, were answered by even more powerful reprisals from the fiend.

The mid-air battle between good and evil continued as ally after ally fell only to stand again and continue the fight. If not for the healing power of our cleric ally, Morgan, our party would have certainly suffered casualties. Slowly they chipped away at the creature’s defenses as the champions traded blows, while the sorcerer pummeled the fiend with magic. Blood flowed freely on either side of the struggle and, in the end, it was the divine strength of the paladin that lent our fighter the power necessary to deal the final blow.

Gravely injured, Serena whispered a prayer to her god, and Taryn, he of righteous power and justice answered, infusing Gintare’s sword with his will! The bold female warrior skillfully sliced her short sword at the creature in an upward motion, tearing through the ettin in an earth-shattering blow that exposed the back muscles to sever the spine. The half-demon crumpled into a twitching mass of tattered flesh and black, steaming blood as the party lifted their swords, crying out in triumph.

Hegelin 8th

Hissoryth is defeated.

We were able to ascertain the location of his lair, the roots of a giant tree located in the center of a vast swamp to the northeast of Orfort, and made our assault on the evil dragon.

We made our approach, having cast the spells we thought would best aid us in our battle, and were assaulted by a large group of vile boggards. The creatures fell easily to sword and spell alike, but it was the latter, that truly decimated the horde. Suman, filled to bursting with arcane power, unleashed wave after wave of destructive magic, leaving dead boggards whose burning corpses would have surely filled the sky with smoke, were it not for the watery graves that claimed them.

The dragon itself did not appear for some time, likely gauging our power, by observing our method of attack. A sound strategy, but his calculations clearly failed, for in the end, our party claimed his life.

The battle with the dragon took place entirely beneath the surface of the swamp. For a time, the trickery of an illusion spell masked his presence, but our party eventually encountered him as we explored the roots of the tree. Pools of acid and vicious claw and bites were his weapons and he wielded them without reprisal, while his defensive spells held. The sorcerer and I were quick to dispel those effects, which enabled our fighters to land blows.

Our fight was not flawless, however. Members of my party fell to the might of the beast, but with our powerful cleric ally nearby, death could not hold them and the beast was forced to flee beneath the relentless onslaught. It sought to find refuge within it’s sanctuary, but our group pressed the attack and finished it off, leaving it dead amongst its vast collection of treasure – and the black opal.

Hegelin 15th

We’ve spent the last several days in relative safety with Bren. During this time we have concentrated our efforts on finding out more about the gems and the Crown of Storms itself.

Morgan’s connection to her diety has, again, proven invaluable. Though the information we obtained is not precise, we have learned that the crown was created by Helios and is not inherently evil in nature. Additionally, when whole, the crown is able to project several magical abilities simultaneously, similar to a prismatic spray spell. The effects of these are as yet unknown, but each of the gems is linked to one of the primary schools of magic and each effect corresponds to these and only with the crown will the power to harness these abilities truly be within our reach.

Curious to know more, I have begun experimenting with the black opal, which as we all suspected, is linked to the school of necromancy. I have managed to learn little, despite my greatest efforts. The opal becomes warm to the touch when held and seems to pulse with what I can only describe as a reflection of my own life force. Indeed, the pulsating rhythm of the gem seems linked to that of my own heart – very strange. I will continue my studies. I believe that given enough time, I will learn to unlock more of its potential.

It is my hope that the knowledge does not come too late. Powerful forces are at work in the world today and I believe that our success in overcoming the evil that we all feel is bound to our knowledge of the workings of this artifact.

I was able to locate the adventuring band, Redhart. The band seems formidable, and is comprised of a paladin, a ranger, a cleric, a fighter and a sorcerer – their names, Serena, Khidaj, Morgan, Gintare and Suman respectively. I feel better after my meeting with them.

It took some convincing, but I was able to confirm my identity as the sole surviving member of the Righteous Vanguard. After some interviews and rigorous questioning, I have been allowed to join their number for a time. It will take more effort to assuage their concerns over my devilish companion, Ziglub, but they were at least partially mollified by the fact that I am known to be loyal to Goldhart and the fact that I kept him well out of sight.

I have had little opportunity to discuss personal matters with any, but it appears our goals are aligned. Much of the information I acquired while in captivity seems to hold relevance to their quest, although it appears that the direction of that quest is somewhat ambiguous at present.

I am certain now that the sense of foreboding that I have been feeling is not of my own imagining. I’ve learned that this group of adventurers has played a prominent role in shaping the current state of events and may have been pivotal in placing the current king into power. This King Jarrod appears to be a just, humble leader and a fine administrator. Ironically, while they are ostensibly loyal to this king, the party is divided on their opinion of him. This point that the party debates is no small matter of personality or character flaws either. The question they currently struggle with is this: Is this man their greatest ally, the noble and just King Jarrod or is he, in fact, their greatest enemy, an evil entity called the Dark One who is intent on destroying the good of the world?

I heard very compelling arguments to support each view, but I am reserving judgment on the matter until I learn more.

The party does agree that great caution is called for whatever the case may be, because according to them, this foe is likely beyond our power. For that reason, rather than press for a confrontation, the group has decided to buy time by preventing this entity from getting his hands on an artifact known as the Crown of Storms. They believe that The Dark One desperately seeks this item in order to bring his plans to fruition. I’ve been told that the full potential of The Crown of Storms cannot be unleashed unless five gems, each corresponding to a specific school of magic, are affixed to it. The gem associated with necromancy is an opal, and believed to be in the hands of black wyrm named Hissoryth who resides far to the northeast. We have decided to obtain this opal and venture forth on the morrow.

I am Stravos Greylocke, quartadecima ordinis magus transmutationis, and the last living member of the company known as The Righteous Vanguard.

The manner in which I arrived at this place and time is of little consequence as I intend this to be a record of what is to come and not of the past. Still, I cannot leave you completely in the dark, so I will preface what follows by stating that I have spent the last three years a captive of evil giants. It has been only three months since I escaped. I was imprisoned as a result of a betrayal at the hands of a person named Cyn. My loyal and goodly companions were slain in ambush and I have recently learned that my liege, an honest, good man, was recently executed for crimes against the crown. Suffice it to say that I have experienced better years.

I have spent much time deliberating on my next course of action and in doing so, decided to begin a journal of my travels as of this day. My proclivities lie in mathematics and arcane formulae, not augury. Despite this, a sense of foreboding has been my constant companion since learning of the death of my Lord Mangus Goldhart. Something is amiss, though I cannot put my finger on it. I feel change upon the wind as if the very nature of this world is in transition. It reminds me of the sensation I get when performing certain transmutations. Things are no longer what they were. How, I do not know. But I feel it nonetheless.

I do not know what role I am to play in the events that are to come, if any, but I will document it to the best of my ability.

I strike out for Celedon tomorrow. I have learned that Redhart, a company loyal to Goldhart, frequents the temple of Diakris in the city and it is my hope that they can shed more light on the events surrounding his death. I do not know if I can trust them, but I have little else to go on. I hope their association with Goldhart means what it did when the man yet lived.

What Do We Do Now?

After the fight with the sorceress Leona, we went back to find that the teleportation locations in Leona’s Tower were no longer functioning. The other two portals that we didn’t go through are still a mystery. We returned to the palace, and we were told that King Jarrod would see us tomorrow.

King Jarrod invites us to lunch, and we eat with him in a room that looks as though it has been stripped of wealthy ornaments and artwork. We’ve noticed other missing items around the palace lately.

We tell him about our search and fight with leona, and we tell him of everything we found except for Blackwood’s letter to Leona. We purposely leave that out.

We also ask if we can use Leona’s Tower as a base of operations and he agrees. He also gives us the name of an architect he has used in the past to help.

Jarrod says that he would like for us to stay while we train and until he calls on us. He has something he needs to ask us, especially Suman. We agree, and we use the time to train.

Hegeline 5th (one year after Mangus’ execution and a sacred day for Jaydal)
RedHart finishes training (cost was 459 gold each). During this time, we hear that all of the nobles have been meeting with King Jarrod.

Today we went to Balthazar and asked him several questions. Most of it he could not help us with, but he agreed to look into locating where Fak (one of the Shadow Warriors who originally found the false puzzle box) was being kept in Hell.

We asked to see Lady Sinare, but she wouldn’t be available until 7 days from now.

We then visited the historian, William of Greyburn. We asked him to look into the questions Leona had written about the Crown of Storms. Specifically, if the crown created by Helios for Audren was the same crown.

Hegeline 6th – 10th
We teleport to the GoldHart Hospital to leave Eva. It’s difficult to say goodbye, but it’s obvious that since the idea for this hospital has become a reality, Eva’s enthusiasm for it has grown. Eva gives Suman the Rey’s Pendant to keep RedHart safe.

While leaving Eva to help build her hospital, there were already a few people there helping. One of these Suman recognized as an old friend, Morgan. Morgan is a Cleric of the Missing God and she has hoped to run into Suman again. Morgan has eagerly agreed to join us. With Eva’s departure, a Cleric is much appreciated.

Then we traveled to Bren’s so that Suman could check on his fiancee, Lynette. Bren tells the couple that they are expecting twins. Certain of what he must do, Suman agrees to speak to Lynette’s father about marriage.

While Suman meets with Lynette, Khidaj searches for his new animal companion. Still a little in shock at the loss of his hawk, Khidaj eventually meets an owl who takes to him quickly.

Hegeline 11th
Suman talks to Lynette’s father, Baronet Armstrong, to discuss marriage. The wedding is set for the 30th of Hegeline.

We meet with Lady Sinare, and she tells us to talk to Cynara, Servant of Diakris, Lady of the Tower in the North(ancient dragon at the tower in the north) in regards to the Storm Giants.

Hegeline 12th
We talk with the historian, William of Greyburn, to see what he has discovered. He confirms that the crown written about by Leona was not the same Crown of Storms. He can find no other information on the crown or Storm Giants. Each member pays 175 gold for his services.

We meet with King Jarrod finally to discover what he wanted to say. He tells us, that after much discussion with each noble, he will, on the 30th of Hegeline, exonerate Mangus Goldhart and the Goldhart family of any and all crimes!

Furthermore, he asks Suman to make the speech on the 30th. Jarod also says that they will name the day after Mangus as the Day of Restoration!

Suman invites the King to his wedding and the King asks if he can perform the ceremony. The wedding will happen in the evening of the 30th, after the announcement.

Hegeline 13th
Suman attempts to teleport RedHart to Cynara’s tower in order to ask Cynara questions about the Storm Giants (as suggested by Lady Sinare). Not knowing the area well, he misses the mark and they have to travel to get to the tower.

In route, RedHart is attacked by a large, purple, spider-like creature with a flail weapon. The creature is highly intelligent, casting spells and turning invisible.

Gintare begins babbling uncontrollably. At times she stands still, other times she is lucid, but unfortunately, some times she attacks her group. After Morgan had been hit by the creature, Gintare kills her with several precise blows.

Quickly Suman teleports Morgan away. He tries for Lady Sinare’s temple, but instead arrives at the Temple of Belin in Granidier. Suman takes note of the area and teleports Morgan to Sinare’s temple yelling for help. As soon as others come, Suman teleports back to the fight.

Serena and Khidaj had been fighting Gintare to try and stop her. At one point, Suman notices that she is lucid and yells at her to drop her sword, which she does. Then suddenly she draws her cold iron sword and attacks Serena.

Using non-lethal damage, Serena knocks Gintare out. As we start to tie her up, the creature appears again knocking Suman out. Khidaj fights the creature and is poisoned badly. Serena rushes over to Suman and heals him in time for Suman to teleport everyone out to Sinare’s temple.

Khidaj dies of the poison before anyone can rush to his aid at the temple. Morgan is dead, and Gintare is knocked out. We raise Morgan and she raises Khidaj.
